Michelle Obama Becoming Documentary!

Published May 10, 2020 by Shay Taree

So just yesterday I had a chance to check out Michelle Obama’s documentary Becoming which is out on Netflix. The documentary takes place during Michelle Obamas book tour and the series of interviews that she does. You also learn more about her family such as her mom, her older brother, and her day who unfortunately passed away years ago. You get to the house she grew up in and you learn more about the struggles that she went through not only as a former first lady but just as a women or more specifically a black woman.

I read Michelle Obama’s book when it first came out and also listened to the audiobook and it had to be one of the most inspiring things I have ever read. So watching the documentary brought me to tears at certain points because of how much I not only related to her but also to the girls that she was speaking with. Plus it just made me feel so inspired and glad to be not only a woman but a black woman because many times the stereotypes, or feeling like you don’t belong, etc can really bring you down and make you wonder if you need to change who you are so that you can belong. And Michelle Obama had the perfect answer to that which was pretty much no and that you should have confidence in yourself.

interview

For me this was a great thing to hear since being a black woman I always struggled with feeling I belong. I was always and still am at times worried about how people see me and what they think about me. I also at times did deal with the stereotypes that followed black women so seeing a black woman like her make it the white house really made me proud to be who I am. Plus I look back on my experiences and I realize just how much they shaped me. Also I’m learning to love my uniqueness and not care about what others have to say about me or what they thing about me because I have to stay true to myself and be happy with who I am.

Another great thing about the documentary was the inclusions of young people that she spoke with and their lives. These instances were also inspiring and also helped see what reading this book did to help them. These parts weren’t long but they were just enough to show you the impact that she had.

Overall I definitely recommend watching this documentary and also reading her book. Like I mentioned above there is a audiobook which is also amazing since Michelle Obama actually reads it. So that’s what I have to say about this documentary and I hope you all enjoy your Sunday.

Rebels Like Us Book Review!

Published April 2, 2020 by Shay Taree

Over this past weekend I decided to do some reading and I ended up finishing a book that I’ve been reading for a while called Rebels Like Us. The book is about a girl by the name of Agnus who moves from New York to Georgia after some drama regarding her mother. While in Georgia she ends up meeting a guy by the name of Doyle and the two fall for each other but experience some drama along the way.

The book dealt with of course romance but also prejudice, the experience of getting older, and realizing that not everyone in world is going to like purely based on your skin color. The dealings of prejudice in this book didn’t appear until almost half way into the book but once it was there it definitely took over the entire story and showed how these issues can affect a relationship. It also showed how these issues can change someone who has never experienced those things before.

The book did have a bit of a slow start and I think that has to do with the topic of the family issues that Agnus and her mom were going through. It was a lot of push and pull with her and her mom which after a while got to be very redundant and needed to be resolved. But after those things were kind of resolved the book really took off especially when it came to the romance between Agnus and Doyle.

Their relationship was pretty much a typical teenage romance all the way down to now knowing what they were to each other but all they knew was that they loved each other. Plus there was the knowing that Agnus may not stick around after they graduate. The issue that made their relationship have the most hardship was the issues and race and how people within their city looked at Agnus and the traditions that the town already had. Agnus in the book is half Irish and half Dominican which Doyle is white. So people in the down automatically looked at Agnus differently especially once she started talking with her New York accent.

Overall though I enjoyed this book and I think what originally had me drawn to this book was the relationship. Thats mostly because I’m in a interracial relationship and know that people can be very ignorant if someone dates outside their race. So seeing the 2 main characters deal with this at such a young age was amazing to see and made the story very interesting.

I definitely recommend checking out this book just know that it does get better as you continue to read since the beginning can be kind of boring. Also this book is available for digital download through iBooks and there is also a audiobook. Also be sure to check me out on youtube where I post videos every Monday, Wednesday, & Saturday.

Onward Movie Review! (SPOILER FREE)

Published March 24, 2020 by Shay Taree

I know that now Onward is soon going to be available for on-demand to rent at home but before it left theaters I had a chance to check it out. I honestly I have to say that this movie was so adorable and definitely a must see.

Onward is about a boy named Ian who on his 16th birthday is given a spell that will allow his dad to come back for 24 hours. Things don’t go as planned and Ian and his older brother Barley embark on an adventure to find the gem which will allow them to spend time with their dad.

The voices of the two main characters Ian and Barley are Tom Holland voicing Iantom holland

and Chris Pratt voicing Barley

.chris pratt

Tom Holland is of course known for portraying Spiderman/Peter Parker in the MCU and Chris Pratt is known for his work also in the MCU as Star Lord/Peter Quill. These guys were hilarious and were definitely a great fit for these characters.

Overall what I thought of the movie is that it was really great. While a lot of people have said that this movie was a flop I honestly don’t believe that. I think they movie would’ve done very well if it wasn’t for what is currently happening in today’s society which has caused a lot of people to stay away from crowded places. The movie was also a great portrayal of a relationship between two brothers which is very different from what we have currently been seeing in animated movies. With movies like Frozen and Frozen 2 which dealt with the relationship between 2 sisters it was great to see a movie about brothers learning more about each other and growing closer.

Yes I do have to also add that this movie will make you cry. This movie had me shedding so many tears because it was such a great symbolism of a dad can be anybody that has been that dad figure to you. It also dealt with facing your fears, going with the flow, and also being selfless. Which are all great qualities that someone should learn and see.

So I definitely recommend checking out this movie and watching it will your whole family. It definitely has something in there for everyone which I think most Pixar/Disney movies have. Also let me know what you thought of this review and I plan to write more reviews soon and also more blogs in general. So comment below an ideas you have for blog posts.
