I’ve noticed more and more in anime that CGI is being used and I’ll be honest I’m not the biggest fan of it. I feel like it gives the anime a fake look to it that isn’t realistic.
I definitely favor the original hand drawn look to anime since it’s just looks much cleaner and realistic. But maybe this is just me.
But what do all of you think of CGI in anime? Do you enjoy it and want to see it more or do you want to stick to the hand drawn artistic style of anime?
Comment down below to let me know what you think of this. I can’t wait to read them!
~Anime Reviewer Girl!
When it comes to anime, I prefer hand drawn. I don’t mind it if it’s being used on fight scenes like Dragon Ball Z or One Piece but I don’t think it will feel the same if it was used on the entire anime series. If it was used in video games, I would not mind at all like One Piece: Pirate Warriors.
If it was like the picture you used of Advent Children, that would be different. I guess if it’s originally from a game like the Final Fantasy series, CGI might work.
Yeah I don’t mind CGI when it’s being used in video games but I don’t like when it’s being half used in anime. To me it just makes it look really weird.
Totally agree with you. It then feels like you are watching a game more than a show. I don’t remember but I think there was an anime film called Appleseed that is mostly CGI.
Yeah I’ve heard of that film before and for some reason visually it just wasn’t appealing for me.
Maybe CGI works better in movies. I heard that the One Piece movie 11, only in Japan, was mostly CGI.
That’s sounds really weird for a One Piece movie. I wonder how it did?
I am not sure what the people thought but according to the One Piece Wiki, the movie is entirely CGI and it’s only 30 minutes. Here is what the poster look like:

Hmmm well the poster doesn’t make it look bad.
It looks pretty decent and it is a new and different technique they did for the movie. I have to admit, I am impressed on how hard they did it.
I’m also quite impressed!
So far besides the games, this is only One Piece CGI we have in the anime industry.
Yeah that is true. I wonder if they will do more now.
I don’t know. It could happen. I heard they do 3D animation on the Japanese version of Universal Studios. I think they use it on Evangelion and Attack on Titans.
Yeah I think they do too
Speaking of CGI, I heard that the anime reboot films called Berserk use CGI effects. Based on what I hear, the CGI is supposed to make the combat realistic but it makes it worse.
Really! I haven’t heard of that
Well that is what I heard. I haven’t seen the Berserk films.
Me either.
If you plan to watch Berserk, be prepared for some graphic content. It is rated M for a reason.
No worries I will definitely be prepared.
Berserk will be on my “eventually I will watch” list. Not now but much much later XD.
Yes I think that is how it is going to be for me haha.
I like violence as much as the next guy but Berserk is like a whole new level of violence XD. I seen clips of the films and it’s not pretty. There are so much blood and gore.
Oh wow!
It’s almost like Attack on Titans violence but without holding back anything. This is also includes nudity and sexual moments. It can get graphic based on the IMDb site.
Oh wow!
If you don’t mind the content on it, some people say that the anime is good. I am just going to wait on it.
Yeah so far I don’t mind the content. I guess it’s because I have seen Elfin Leid and the violence sounds kind of similar.
I heard about Elfen Lied. I am not sure if I want to jump into that yet. It looks disturbing violent but I heard that the art is incredible. Who knows, I might get the guts to watch it (no pun intended).
The art is very incredible but it’s also one of those series that definitely needed a second season.
Really? I don’t like how even though an anime does great, it doesn’t get a second season. I am not sure you mentioned it on past post or video, but I think it’s because of money :/.
Yeah a lot of times the reason why an anime doesn’t get a second season is because of money.
Then we have to continue the series by books.
Lol yup
^ i agree… prefer 2D than 3D… full CGI is suitable for video game adaptation anime like God Eater, etc..
Yup exactly!
computer aided design (CAD)*That’s what my animation tutor told us to call it.* I personally think it all comes down to how it’s integrated into the show.
“Straight Title Robot Anime” uses it to comical effect while “Arpeggio of Blue Steel” looks awkward because it’s trying to look 2d while being obviously 3d.
Yeah there are moments when I don’t mind it but when it’s not integrated well I just really don’t like it.
I have mixed opinions. I enjoyed the use of CG in Advent Children (even though you’re right that it doesn’t look realistic . . . but neither does classic anime style). But I think that for most actual anime, I do prefer a more hand-drawn sort of style; it just seems to fit better. 🙂
Yeah but I also feel the same way about the Disney movies. I like the look of the ones that were hand drawn more than the CGI ones.
I understand where you’re coming from, but I actually disagree on that one. But I personally dislike Disney’s animation style in general, so I prefer the CG movies.
Oh wow really! That is really interesting
I prefer hand drawn, but some anime do make an exception. I just feel like CGI is more fit for video games… and if anime wasn’t hand drawn, it just wouldn’t give off the “anime” vibe or whatever. I don’t quite think hand drawn is more realistic than CGI, but personally, I would still favor hand-drawn animations over CGI for anime. 🙂
This seems to be a recurring opinion with this topic that many people like the look of hand drawn anime better and prefer CGI when it comes to video games.
I don’t like CGI because its obvious that most studios don’t have the budget to make it look good. It also clashes with the hand drawn art.
Yes! I hate when studios try and do both together. It just looks really weird
